Quick answer

The operator says the cable car may be suspended in a rainstorm or thunderstorm, and that it stops on scheduled servicing days while the village stays open. Fog and low cloud do not necessarily stop the ride, but they can hide the bay and the Buddha. Check the forecast the evening before and choose a date you can change.

The operator says that in inclement weather, such as a rainstorm or thunderstorm, the cable car service may be suspended, depending on the actual circumstances. It points visitors with tickets to its guest services hotline. The booking page adds that the service may be cancelled because of bad weather or other reasons, and that a partial refund is given if parts of it have to be changed or cancelled. Read your own confirmation for the terms that apply to your ticket.

Fog and cloud

Cloud does not appear in the operator's FAQ as a reason to close, but a Hong Kong travel site says the view from the cable car and from the Buddha is weather-dependent and that in heavy cloud the visibility can drop to zero. Even at the statue's feet, it says, the face can stay unclear in thick fog. A clear sky over Tung Chung does not guarantee a clear plateau, because Ngong Ping is a highland. Treat the view as likely on a clear day and never as certain.

Servicing days

The operator's FAQ says the cable car is temporarily suspended on scheduled servicing days, while Ngong Ping Village stays open. Dates change from year to year, so check the operator's notices for the day you choose. A Hong Kong travel site notes that New Lantao Bus route 23 is the alternative when the cable car is closed or very crowded. On such a day you would still reach the village, but not by cable car.

What to check before you choose

Look at the forecast two days out and again the evening before. Pick a date you can change, since a cancellation made up to a day ahead is refunded. Read the operator's notices for servicing days. If the day looks doubtful, favour the Standard Cabin over the glass ones, because a glass floor adds nothing when there is nothing below to see.

Why the plateau can differ from the shore

Ngong Ping is a highland on western Lantau, and Wikipedia says Lantau Peak, the second-highest peak in Hong Kong at 934 metres, rises south-east of it. A Hong Kong travel site says that at that height, on foggy or rainy days, the visibility can drop to zero. The practical lesson is to read the forecast for the hills, not only for Tung Chung, because the sky over the bay can differ from the sky over the plateau.

What the booking promises

Cancel up to a day ahead and the fare is returned, and you can reserve now and pay later. The ticket also warns that the service may be cancelled for bad weather or other reasons, with a partial refund when parts of it have to change or stop. Vouchers have no cash value and are good only on the date stamped, so choose the date with that in mind.

A plan B for a bad day

If the cable car stops or the sky closes in, the plateau is still reachable by road. Wikipedia lists New Lantao Bus route 23 between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping, and the village stays open on servicing days. On a day of heavy cloud, though, the statue may be hidden anyway, so a good plan B is another date. Save the ride for a clear day and use the cloudy one for something indoors.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cable car run in rain?

The operator says it may be suspended in a rainstorm or thunderstorm, depending on the actual circumstances. Its guest hotline gives updates for ticket holders.

What happens on servicing days?

The operator says the cable car is temporarily suspended while Ngong Ping Village stays open. Check its notices for your date.

Can fog hide the Big Buddha?

Yes. A Hong Kong travel site says the view is weather-dependent and that in heavy cloud the visibility can drop to zero.

Should I book the Crystal Cabin on a cloudy day?

Not unless you do not mind a white floor. Cloud hides what the glass is meant to show. The Standard Cabin gives the same ride for anyone who prefers it.
